Happy Fall!

Hello ladies!

I want to thank Glenna for all the work she did to make it possible to do our first Zoom meeting and class last month!

I want to thank Gail Jensen for being willing to be the first teacher to give it a try. Thanks to those who painted along. I think it went well and we will continue this way for at least the next couple of months.

Next up is Kay Salisbury teaching the fun mad scientist Frog. This class will be on October 17th.  Meeting at 9 am. We will start painting immediately following. There is one surface left. Contact Pat McKean if you are interested.

November 21 - Kristen Birkeland - Lovely rosemaling plate - $10 for pattern; on your own for wood.  She painted it on a 16" plate (RNSP-16 from Turn of the Century). Very cool plate.  If you don't add the border a 12 - 13" plate will work without changing the size of the pattern.

I hope you are all doing well! Hope to see you all on ZOOM on Oct 17th.

Take care!

Betty

Our September meeting will be a Zoom meeting. Normal date and time, September 19 at 9 am.  For those that want a test run we will have a quick Zoom test the night before at 6:30.  The class will be pre-recorded and the link will be on the Blog and probably e-mailed. Zoom is a free app. If you Google ZOOM the option will come up to download and it will walk you through loading it.

Pat McKean will have wood and patterns for September and October.  Please coordinate with her for payment and pick up of the surface(s). We will try to make it as contact free as possible.  FYI - There are no electronic payment options at this time.

If you are missing classes, many teachers are offering free classes or inexpensive classes.

Try Facebook or YouTube.

Some I have been looking at/taking on Facebook:

She does the mixed media book, painting, etc.

Tracy Moreau has been doing free Saturday morning classes. Well except you need to buy the e-pattern which is typically $7-$9. (The dragonfly I taught at retreat awhile back was her pattern)

She is hosting a free 12+ hour - 12 Hour Art Party this Saturday beginning at 9 am.
It is a different teacher at the top of every hour. They are recorded and will be available on the page for a month or two after.

Roberta Hixson Hutcheon
1943 ~ 2020

One of heaven's most precious souls has returned home. Roberta Hixson Hutcheon, the beloved daughter of Shirley Hixson and Douglas Hixson, was born Nov. 10, 1943, and passed Jun 1, 2020. Survived by husband Clay, brother Ray Hixson, four children, and eight beautiful grandchildren. Roberta was a talented artist and life was her canvas.

This is a photo of Roberta at our guild Christmas party.  She looked gorgeous and stunning with her short gray hair.  We will miss you Roberta!

It is with a sad heart that we said goodbye to Robert Hutcheon.  Many of us have painted with Roberta for 35-40 years.  Her funeral services were perfect and reflected her sweet personality and artistic talent.   Pat McKean represented the guild and gave a wonderful talk.  Thank you Pat! The guild donated money to cancer research in Roberta's name.  Roberta's husband was very thankful for the donation because he wants researchers to find a cure for cancer.

After the graveside services, we were invited to Roberta's home, where her family had her beautiful artwork on display. See the photos below.  Roberta was a beautiful and fast painter, and she always finished her projects. Our hearts go out to her husband, Clay, her children and grandchildren.

Ladies from our painting guild that attended the services:
Pat Nelson, Kay Salisbury, Velma Glad, Marilyn Healy,
Pat McKean, Gail Jenson, Shonnie Whitney, and Maridene Alexander.

May 2020 Newsletter

Utah Guild of Heritage Artists

May 2020 Newsletter

Hello Painting Ladies,

We hope that you are all doing well and that you and your family members are in good health during this COVID-19 pandemic.

We have all had to make many changes in our lifestyle, and give up many of the things we enjoy doing the most:  painting together as friends, celebrating birthdays and anniversaries, shopping in stores, going to movie theaters, going to concerts, going to plays, and the list goes on and on.

In return, we have all had to look inward.  Find new ways to entertain ourselves.  Develop our talents.  Learn to cook something new.  Finish quilting, painting and craft projects that were left undone.  Dejunk and clean out our homes. We have been able to really enjoy and appreciate nature.  The sky looks bluer than ever before.  Our air is cleaner.  The stars shine brighter. The blossoms on the trees and the tulips somehow look prettier than we ever noticed.  Our animals are happy to have us home.  We find joy in the simple things.

Your UGHA Board met via Zoom on Monday evening.  We discussed what we do next.  Do we hold the May meeting?  What about retreat?  The group decided, as a whole, that we should hold off a bit longer.  We are therefore canceling the May meeting and the retreat in June.    This was a very hard decision to make.  We were all looking forward to Marilyn's class and the classes we had arranged for retreat.  We talked about still offering these classes perhaps throughout the year or at next year's retreat.

We are looking forward to our August 15th opening social at the Grimm family home in Tooele.  We will be painting the flamingo that was scheduled for retreat.  As well as painting, there will be swimming, favors, and fun.  If still suggested, social distancing can happen at the opening social.  Twelve flamingos were pre-purchased. The first twelve people to send their payment to Pat McKean will get the ordered pieces.  The cost is $17.00.

Send to:                 Pat McKean
                              6695 S 1655 E
                              Cottonwood Hts, UT 84121

We hope you understand that we are thinking of you, hoping that we call get through this and that the very smart doctors and scientists find a vaccine for this disease.  We do believe that if we follow the guidelines, keep social distancing and wear masks, we can keep safe.

The world will be back to the way we know it.  And when it does, we will meet again as friends and painters and create lovely artwork.

Sincerely yours,

UGHA Board Members

I found these pictures of the Coronavirus.  It is interesting to see these artist's depictions of this disease.

Hi Ladies!!

Thank you all for your help with the Karen Brouwer seminar. I love Karen and was thrilled we could offer this seminar. I hope everyone enjoyed it.  There is a set of paints for each project in a labeled box in the shower at the studio. Please do your best to keep sets together and return them to the shower.

Karen left her finished pieces for us. We will have a raffle ($1 per ticket) funds to be donated to the Assistance League which supports women getting out of abusive relationships, kids, and many, many others.  This year, we will also pick a day to volunteer with them pulling clothing together for needy kids. More info to follow on that.

March - Marilyn is teaching a beautiful poinsettia on a canvas covered in wrinkled tissue paper. If you missed her demonstration for applying the tissue paper at the seminar, it can be viewed on Let's Paint with Plaid. Her poinsettia turned out beautifully.  Consider bringing a friend.

Donna will stop in to talk to us in March about April and May's painting from a photo. Please bring a few photos you are considering and she will talk to each of us. She will also pass out a supply list.  I'm very excited for this. I have some photos I have been wanting to paint and have not attempted.

Look forward to seeing you all for March's meeting.

                                                             Enjoy!

April 28 and May 16 - Painting from a photo

Donna Richards will be teaching us how to paint from a photo.
This will be a two-part class in April and May.  A landscape or some outdoor
subject would be a perfect choice  for the seminar   won’t be intended for painting a portrait of a human or a pet  but they will learn a few things that would still apply.

Hi Ladies!!

I would like to thank Glenna one more time for teaching in January. The kids playing in the snow was a great project. I would also like to thank all those that provided food and raffle items.

There is no regular meeting this month. I'm thrilled, excited, and over the moon that Karen Brouwer will be teaching a seminar on February 27-29.

Karen is great fun to paint with.  All paint will be provided in class. The snow globes need to be prepped. If you do not have prep or line drawings please contact Pat McKean  801-631-6100 or me 801-699-1246. The wrens and hummingbirds are prepped. You may want to trace the pattern just in case.

Karen Brouwer Seminar
February 27 - 29, 2020
Will be held at:
Lion's Club in Bluffdale
1881 W 14400 S
Bluffdale, UT 84065

There is a church next door. Parking is allowed there as well.  The building will be open at about 8:30 AM.  A light breakfast and lunch will be provided. Plan to paint until approximately 5 pm.

I will have Marilyn'/s March project at the seminar. She did a wonderful job.  It is a beautiful poinsettia on a canvas covered with tissue paper and then painted on. This is from an on-line Paint with Plaid class.  Marilyn will demo putting the tissue on at the February seminar. The original piece is on a 12 X 16 canvas. The size can be adjusted. This may be a good project for any beginners you wish to invite but it was suggested using a smaller canvas for beginners or if you want to finish the piece at the meeting.

Donna Richards will be teaching us to paint from a photo in April and May. Donna will stop in at the March meeting to explain further and bring a supply list. I'm going to have a hard time picking a photo. There are a few from vacations I have wanted to paint but have not tackled. I'm excited Donna has committed two months to us to teach us how.

All those headed to Vegas -- safe travels. Please bring pieces to the March meeting for show and tell. Thanks for all your support.

                                                             Enjoy!

PLEASE NOTE:  The seminar classes will be held at the Lion's Club, 1881 West 14400 South, Bluffdale, Utah.

The project pieces for Thursday and Saturday are already based.  You will need to base in the snow globes for Friday's class.  It is recommended that painters bring an ott light or magnifying glasses with lights because the work on the snow globes is tiny.
