May 2022 UGHA Newsletter

Utah Guild of Heritage Artists - UGHA

President's Message - May

Dear UGHA Members,

What a wet spring we are having. We had to have trees trimmed from the damage of freezing rain and then we had snow. Yikes! The patterns and boxes are in. Judy asks that we get the prep done.  This is not so large that it shouldn’t be too difficult. Lunch is provided. May 21st at 9:00 a.m.   `

June we will be meeting on the 4th Saturday so far. We will be doing watercolor on cards. Donna Richards is teaching. Blick has Canson Blank Greeting Cards – white watercolor with envelope, pkg of 6 for $5.88. We can use acrylic paint in place of watercolor too. Works well. Donna will work up examples and I will send them out soon. $5 each for the pattern.

Glenna heard back on the cost of the spider boxes and they have gone up to $35 each because of the price of the wood Let me know if you are interested or not. I know a few I have talked to said they are not interested at that cost.

We are moving the seminar with Carol Spohn to October. It will not be so hot that month also we will not run into people taking a vacation.

Hope to see you at the meeting. We will still be recording  the class for those that cannot attend.

Best,

Marilyn Healy, President

Utah Guild of Heritage Artists

President's Message - April

If you are needing to order the Bentwood box for the May project, I need to get the order to DePalma’s by April 8th.  Let Gail know and get her a check or Venmo her ASAP so we can order them. You can, as always, use your own surface. The dimensions are 4 ¾” x 7 ½” x 3 ¾” high.

I am ready to get together and paint. Thanks to Loretta for teaching The CREATE banner/blocks. They were such fun. Loved the color Loretta used on her blocks. We are sending hugs to Loretta’s daughter who had surgery. Wishing her a speedy recovery.

Kay is teaching the concrete cat this month. We just need to base coat in black. The cats are at Glenna’s studio ready for pick up, or you can come that day and base them if you don’t want to take back and forth.

In May Judy Graham is teaching a beautiful pattern on a bentwood box (optional surface).

Thanks to everyone who is stepping up to teach and help. We had a raffle in March and Jacque Illguth is helping with the raffle. Anyone who can bring items to donate to the raffle this month, please bring them.

If you can donate items to the Mother’s in shelters project we are going to need them at this April meeting in order to get them to the shelter by Mother’s Day. Please get them to the studio. They will accept artwork if you want to donate anything like that. I was going to get diapers and a few things like shampoo and conditioners.

Thanks in advance.

Marilyn Healy, UGHA President

March 2022 Newsletter

Dear Painters:

I can’t wait to see what everyone painted from those that went to Las Vegas. We are ready to get back to meeting again. Loretta is teaching an Erika JoAnn design. I have all the little embellishments supplied:  buttons, yarn, painted 2" round, frame for the letter "E.”

Kay Salisbury is teaching the concrete cat for April. Please let Gail know right away if you are signing up and how many you need so we can make sure to get enough poured and ready. I am painting one for my daughter. This would make a great gift. The cost is $20.

Judy will be teaching a beautiful floral box for May. The box will be $23.00. We will need to have these ordered by April 8th. The pattern will be $10. So please, let Gail know what you are signing up for and if you are getting a pattern or if you will be signing up for the surface as well. You can certainly use your own surface though.  Just a reminder you can Venmo Gail at @GailJenson. Just use a smiley face in the description then message her what you paid for. You can mail her a check if you feel more comfortable with this method as well.

Hope to see you at the meeting. We will still be recording for those that cannot attend.

Happy painting!

Marilyn Healy, UGHA President

February 2022 Newsletter

Winter Olympics in Beiijing, China -- Go U.S.A. Team!

February is upon us. The days are getting a bit longer.

Thanks to Betty Van Pelt for teaching in January. It was such fun. I finished mine and it is on the porch.

Since so many of us are going to Las Vegas, we will not be getting together with the Guild in February. However, Loretta is teaching a fun project for March. It is an Erika JoAnn pattern.

Let Gail know whether you want the pattern or pattern and kit (which is the wood blocks).  Gail's email address is: chatgail@yahoo.com. We will order everything, and we will have kits with a small frame cut from the Cricut, a 2” wooden disc for yarn ball as well as some buttons. There is prep on this piece. Each block has scrapbook paper glued on with Mod Podge to the front of each and let it dry. (There is a YouTube video of how to glue scrapbook paper on wood if you have questions.) I used light colors; one of light green with dots, one pink, and the others beige. You could make a banner if you do not want to glue onto blocks. I would paint onto watercolor paper and do some mixed media on the background if you wanted such as a chevron stamp or some pale watered-down splattered colors.

Kay will teach the concrete cat in April. Judy Graham will be teaching a floral box in May. No price yet. Thanks to all the ladies that have agreed to teach.

Sincerely,

Marilyn Healey

UGHA President

President’s Message:

Happy New Year! I think the year 2022 is a nice even number so we can expect a nice calm, even year. That is what I am hoping for anyway. I know the COVID 19 numbers are high so if you are not comfortable with coming to meet in person, we have Zoom available.

Please plan on joining us as Betty Van Pelt will be teaching a cute snowman project. I am painting mine on a galvanized bucket. We did something like that years ago, but I gave mine away as a gift. So, I am needing one I can put snowmelt in. It has different seasons of snowmen on it, and this will be great on the porch. You can decide what surface you paint on though.

Kay has so graciously agreed to teach a concrete cat in February. This will be great in the yard. Maybe it will keep the raccoons away. She has painted up an orange and a grey one to offer two options.

Stay safe!

Marilyn Healy

Board President

Christmas Party Photos

We all had a lot of fun at the UGHA Christmas party. Thank you to Betty for being our fearless leader the past two Covid years. She did a tremendous job and worked hard to keep us all painting during the Covid epidemic. We owe her a huge debt of gratitude.

We made a few changes to how we run our guild. Instead of having a full board, we reduced the board size down to three. Our president is Marilyn Healy and Loretta Tatum and Gail Jensen serve on the board. Please be willing to help these ladies out as we go through the year!

Here are photos of the people that won the items painted by Karen Brouwer, lucky folks!

Here are photos of Betty receiving thank you gifts for her two years of service! Thank you Betty you worked really hard keeping us painting during Covid and learning to paint via Zoom.

 Utah Guild of Heritage Artists

November 2021 Newsletter

Hi all,

I hope you are enjoying the cooler nights and you got out to see the beautiful leaves.

The Sandy McTier seminar was a lot of fun.  Two days of painting and laughs.  Thanks to all who supported this event. Sandy McTier Designs has a membership group if you are interested.  This month is two short projects and one long one.  Everything is recorded and available for approximately a year.  Very supportive members. Mostly journal pages but you can do them on any surface.  Variety of projects.  A monthly challenge.  There is no pressure.  I have a list of those I want to catch up on.

Thank you to all who responded to our poll on the size of the board (28 responses - most of the group, much appreciated).  Over 96% voted for the smaller board.  We will be holding elections in December since we have been getting a better turnout for the social gatherings.  Marilyn will be president since she was president-elect and to keep some consistency.  Gail will be treasurer since she was treasurer-elect (Pat will be helping with the transition.)  There is one spot open, we would like someone not currently on the board to volunteer.  If you are interested please contact Marilyn. 801-554-7665.

Dues are due.  $25 for the year.

Nov 20th -9 am -  $10- Jacque is teaching water droplets on a cabbage leaf. We will start with a brief meeting then painting. Journal page 7 X 10 or own surface.  Paint Hauser medium green or other medium green. The pattern will be applied after some additional steps that day.

Dec 4 - Noon - $25 - Christmas Party at noon at Marie Callendar's,
1109 E 3900 S, Millcreek, UT 84117
Please contact Pat McKean if you will be attending.
Lunch, voting, project ideas for next year, and a gift exchange.
Please bring a gift of approximately $15 value.
Please bring project ideas for next year. Indicate whether you are willing to teach or if we need to find someone.
We will have three main courses to choose from at the restaurant and drink and pie.
I need to confirm the menu with the restaurant.

January 15 - 9 am - $10- Snow Days pattern by Shara Reiner - Taught by Betty V.
The pattern is for 11 X 15 inches basket from Painter's Paradise #33344 (currently out of stock)

Hope to see you all soon.
Take care.

Happy Painting,
Betty
