Hello Painting Friends,

May's painting class should be a lot of fun.  Thank you Jan for teaching this project.

Our retreat is coming up in June.  There are a lot of great classes planned.  If you haven't done so already, please get signed up as soon as you can because we need to order the painting surfaces and supplies.  Please read the updates below about the retreat classes.

Glenna is in Seria on a dig, so I am filling in for her.  

Roberta has not been feeling well and we want to let her know that we are thinking of her and hoping she gets feeling better soon. Roberta, we miss seeing you at painting.

Our service project this year is to the Assistance League.  They especially help babies, children and elderly people.  All workers are volunteers.  They raise a lot of their money through their thrift store.  Please take a look at the information below and bring your gently used items and hygiene kit items to the opening social.  We may also see if people are available when they build clothing kits in Sept - Nov. I will get more information on what is most needed and what volunteering entails and when they need the help when it gets closer.

May 18, 2019 Class - 9:00 am

Our May project is this wonderful box that holds cell phones so that you can charge them.  Jan Pecharich will be teaching this project. Everyone should have their wood already.  Prep instructions were emailed out to everyone who has paid.   Pattern packets will be handed out at the May meeting.

Painting Retreat will be held June 20-22

The theme this year is "Take a Hike."  This will be a super fun get-away to paint in the mountains.  We will be going to Jolynne's cabin.  A copy of the sign-up sheet is below.  You can click on the photo and print it out.  Or Pat McKean has blank forms.  Registration will be $75.00 for members and $100 for non-members. Please get signed up as soon as possible because we need to order the paints and painting surfaces. 

Added information as follows:

• Pat McKean will be teaching a second class of the Mixed Media Sketch book on Friday evening, so that you can paint the hummingbird feeder on Saturday. The class includes a IDenti pen. 
• On the Hedgehog trivets, the cost for one trivet and a pattern is $18.50.  If you want to order another trivet it is $10.50.  Please let Pat McKean know.
• On the hummingbird feeders, you can buy your own at Home Depot or Shonnie can order you one just like the one in the photo.  Please let Pat know.
• There is a super special raffle item that Kay Salisbury has donated for the retreat.  It is amazing.  
• Jacque Illguth's watercolor class is $8.00 for the pattern, and the paint and paper will be supplied.

August Opening Social & Service Project

Date and time to be announced.  Tirzah will be teaching a Heidi England owl pattern.  We would like you to bring items to put into hygiene kits to donate to the Assistance League.  We will not be putting kits together at the social event.  They put the kits together at the Assistance League.  

The Assistance League would like items donated that they can put into the kits, such as small bottles of shampoo, soap, toothpaste, brushes, floss, washcloths, towels.  They  are also looking for items they can sell, such as clothing, shoes in good shape, housewares, bedding, dishes, knickknacks, decor, purses, luggage, jewelry, small furniture but no TVs with DVD players, they do not sell.  You can also donate time.  From September to November they need people to help pull together clothing kits for school kids.  They have the items, they just need help assembling the kits for individual kids.  

September Seminar - Kristen Birkeland

The seminar will be held for two days -- September 20-21.  The seminar will run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day and will include lunch.   The cost is $80.00 per day or $150.00 for the two days.  Non-members will pay $25.00 extra.  Kristen has set a limit of 16 participants.  Registration priority will be given to those signing up for two days. The 
Rogalund Pedestal Cake Stand will be $17.50 for the wood.  The Telemark Box is $25.25.

2019 Retreat Information

Our Summer Retreat is coming up on June 20, 21 & 22.  A copy of the registration form is attached.  Please send it to Pat McKean to register.  It will be super fun.  The theme is "Take A Hike" and there are some fun projects.  I will post the individual photos of the projects so that you can see them better.

April 20, 2019 Class - 9:00 am

Donna Richards will be teaching our cute and fun summer flowers project. The piece is 9 x 12", but the pattern can be any size.  Those painting the design need to bring their own surface.  Prep the surface with white gesso and then apply a coat of Titanium white.  The pattern includes instructions for drawing a very light line around where the patter will fit into a 6 1/2 inch x 9 inch area.  Place pattern on.  Basing and finishing will be done in class.   Paints will be supplied.

   

May 18, 2019 Class - 9:00 am

March 2019 Newsletter

Hello Painting Friends,

It is hard to believe it's March already, however the weather should be clue enough--snow and rain in the same day!!! Hopefully March will go out like a lamb, since it came in like a lion.  

February's meeting was fun, and I've seen a few finished plates that are really cute, and just in time for St. Patrick's day.  

I hope everyone is looking forward to our painting time with Kay--she designed the table we are painting on March 16, 2019, and I think they will  look great on our summer patio with a nice colorful glass of lemonade.  I hope everyone will come and paint together.  If you aren't painting the project, bring a UFO to finish, and enjoy chatting and lunch with us.   

Our April project will be a great addition to the spring theme, designed and taught by Donna Richards.  The design can be painted on just about any surface, so we can all decrease our wood stashes by one. 

 Jan has already made the boxes for May, can't wait to paint mine.  

Retreat theme "take a hike" will be so fun, and Lisa is working hard to round up the projects.   Take care and see you all March 16, 2019.

Kay Salisbury will teach a beautiful floral design on a round table from IKEA.  It is the same table we have painted on before.    Bring your tables all based in according to Kay's great instructions.

April 20, 2019 Class - 9:00 am

tired of having cell phones all over the place.  Jan has made 12 of the phone charger boxes for this project.  If we need more, she has to have the order by no later than March 16th.  She goes on vacation in April.

Upcoming Seminars

Heart of Utah Seminar - April 11-13 

Featuring Artist Erika Joanne

This is a 3-day seminar with two projects.  The cost is $60 a day plus surface and pattern costs.  The Nativity set is $35 for wood and pattern and it is a one-day class.   The Mouse Tale is a two-day class and it is $65 for wood and pattern.   

The seminar will be at the Bluffdale Lions Club.  Breakfast and lunch will be provided.  Call Nola if you want to sign up for the seminar.  (801) 580-6482.

April Bill Bayer Seminar - Golden Spike Decorative Painter

Bill “Ridley” Bayer began painting as a hobby in 1988. The following year he studied with Bob Ross and became a certified instructor of Bob’s wet on wet technique. He has since studied with many other well know artists developing his own style of painting. Bill has published five instructional books and three DVD's titled "Down Roads... Less Traveled" showcasing his talents. Bill uses his middle name “Ridley” as his signature. Ridley was also his grandfather’s name and Bill signs his paintings in “Paps” honor. Bill and his wife Fran live in St. Louis Mo and many of Bill’s compositions are inspired by the beautiful countryside surrounding their home. Bill paints in oils, acrylic and watercolor and travels across the country teaching the techniques he has learned.

Cost: $225.00 (class fee, canvas with pattern applied, oil paints and medium, color photo with written instructions)

$250 - Non-member

Seminar:  A $50 non-refundable deposit MUST be paid by March 15^th. The check should be made out to Golden Spike Decorative Painters and mailed to the Chapter at 295 W Center Street, PO 302 Willard, UT 84340.

The Seminar will be held at the Riverdale Senior Center 4433 S. 900 W. in Riverdale. Directions: Exit I-15 at Riverdale and go east 0.6 mi to stop light at 900 W. Turn left onto 900 W and proceed north for 0.2 mi. (The Community Center will be on the left.)

Lunches are included in the seminar price. All lunches will include beverages and dessert.

February 2019 Newsletter

Hello fellow painters,

We have some really fun projects coming up.    I hope you all will take on the challenge of each project, especially if it's a new way to paint.  

I would like to thank Judy for teaching in January.  All the people who painted did a beautiful job and their "Lady on the Box (Palek design)" turned out so nice. 

I hope everyone is excited about the February project I am teaching.  Please have the background on and the frog pattern on.  I will have cloverleafs there to do the reverse stencil at the very beginning of class.

Our seminar this year will be with Kristen Birklund in September.  We have included information in this newsletter about the seminars the Heart of Utah and the Golden Spike Decorative Painters have organized.  Please support our neighboring chapters.

Glenna Nielsen will teach a Leprechaun design on a plate.  The pattern fits a 13" plate with an 8 1/2 inch center an d a 2 1/2 rim.  The pattern can be reduced or enlarged to fit another surface.  This will be a "bring your own surface" project.  The cost of the pattern is $10.00.  

March 16, 2019 Class - 9:00 am

January 2019 Newsletter

Hello fellow painters,

I hope everyone had a memorable holiday time, and that this new year will bring joy to everyone.  I am really excited about the projects that have been scheduled for the year, and I hope you all will take on the challenge of each project, especially if its a new way to paint.  

The Christmas party was wonderfully hosted by Lisa at her home, and the food was beautifully presented and tasted delicious.  I speak for us all in a great big Thank You to Lisa Peck for her year as a great chapter president.  I would also like to thank everyone for their support of the chapter...that's what makes it a success for us all.  I would especially like to thank my new board members for there willingness to volunteer to serve for another year.   

I hope everyone is excited about the January project--and thankfully the Palek design Judy is teaching is large enough to see without a microscope!  

I am excited about the seminar we will have with Kristen Birklund,  which we have successfully changed to September so we are all able to support our neighboring chapters in their April seminars.

In Memory

It is with great sadness that I report the passing of one of the Utah Guild of Heritage Artists Lifetime members, Carol Shipley on December 28, 2018.  

Carol held the office of Treasurer for the Guild and served in many capacities. She was willing to help where she was needed.  

She co-owned the Cabin, which was a Decorative Painting store and she taught many classes there. 

Carol was also an avid collector.  She obtained several decorative pieces that were painted by the famous Decorative Painter, Peter Ompir. I remember that she once gave a talk about how to start a collection at Guild and gave us each a hairnet.  She loved to go antiquing, to the D.I. and other thrift stores to add to her many collections.  
We were so lucky that she opened her home to us so that we could view her large Santa Collection. 

She was very musically talented.  She would often provide the entertainment for our Christmas Parties along with her sister, Patty and Patty’s husband.  Carol would always write darling skits to announce the new board or an upcoming meeting.  

Carol had a wonderful smile or a good word for you.  If you ever needed something, she usually had it in her large purse. She will be missed by her many painting friends!

January 19, 2019 Class - 9:00 am

Judy Graham will be teaching a Palekh design on a small box.  The box will be made by Jan Pecharich.  Judy says she used tiny liners.  When she took the class they used Raphael number 8829 in a 2 and 0.  Josonja has a new brush out number 4015 in a 10/0 that is really great.  One of the best things is to bring magnifying glasses so you can see well.
